The photograph only partly shows that Craignethan castle was an important early artillery fortification with an exceptional residential tower which strategically overlooks the River Nethan. Dating back to around 1530, the oldest part is a tower house built by Sir James Hamilton of Finnart. This property is presently managed by Historic Scotland.
