Blair Castle photographs
This is a picture of Blair Castle in Scotland
The Blair Castle photograph shows the ancient home and fortress of the Earls and Dukes of Atholl for over 725 years. Situated in the wide Strath of Garry, near Blair Atholl, it commands a strategic position on the main route through the Scottish Highlands.
It was felt that it was such an important strategic position that whoever held Blair Castle was gatekeeper to the Grampian mountains and the route north to Inverness. Twice besieged, by Cromwell's army in 1652 and by the Jacobites in 1746, just before the disaster of Culloden. One interesting fact is that the Castle has the distinction of being the home of the Atholl Highlanders, Europe's last remaining private army.
